Trade Deadline Special
Well, I’m not too sure what to say at this point. A month ago, the Giants were seemingly locked into a wildcard spot at worse. July 31st, they are sitting 6 games out from a spot in October. This bad, horrendous, dare I say SHITTY stretch of baseball since mid June has turned the Giants into almost guaranteed sellers. It sucks to see because this team should not be even close to having to sell. Is it a management/coaching issue? Could be. Is it a player issue? Could be. We’ll get into that is something special coming up in a week or two. For now, lets talk about the deadline.
The front office pretty much threw in the towel by dealing Tyler Rogers to the Mets for pitcher Jose Butto, outfield Drew Gilbert, and pitcher Blade Tidwell. HAUL! MLB rankings show Tidwell and Gilbert as the Giants new number 12 and 13 ranked prospects after the trade became official. Tidwell already has MLB experience, and Gilbert is very very close to it. It sucks to see T-Rog leave the Giants, but all good things come to an end. Not to mention he’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year anyways, so don’t rule out a reunion.
Lets talk about what should be done now. Two names that I think should be moved by the end of the deadline (which is in an hour and a half of me writing this), are Camilo Doval and Mike Yazstremski. There are others but these two are the ones that are most likely to be gone by 3 pm. Doval is having a bounce back year after the worst season of his career. The front office should be smashing the phones about a Doval deal. After seeing what they got for Tyler Rogers, they have to be grinning from ear to ear about the thought of a potential Doval package. You can also look at the Mason Miller deal that the Padres just pulled off. Sure they go two players in that trade, but the overall haul was a huge overpay for Miller being the main guy in that trade. There is no reason the Giants can’t acquire a few other top 15 prospects for Doval as well. I’d be on the lookout for his name on a different uniform today.
Now, Mike Yastrzemski is an interesting one. “Yaz” is a free agent at the end of the 2025 season, in which is seems pretty unlikely that he stays a Giant at that point. Why not try to get a few players for him? There are plenty of teams that need a lefty outfielder with very above average defense. I mean, we saw what he pulled off against the Pirates on Wednesday. I think if the Giants don’t move him now, it would be a mistake. The outfield depth they have is already decently deep with Matos, Luciano, Lee, all able to play some right field. Yaz has never been the greatest hitter of all time, so the Giants would definitely not be parting ways with a big piece of hitting, although apparently no one can hit on the Giants.
There are other names being thrown around as trade pieces, such as Wilmer Flores, Justin Verlander, and Robbie Ray. Wilmer would be the most likely to be traded out of these three. Ray being thrown in there seems like a joke to me and I’m upset about it.
This post was a little bit of a mess, so I hope it makes sense. Keep an eye out on my twitter and instagram for announcements regarding trades and moves.
Happy hunting!
